Consultant Haematologist based at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and Wrexham Maelor Hospital

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) is the largest health organisation in Wales. It provides a full range of primary, community, mental health and acute hospital services for a population of around 676,000 people across the six counties of North Wales (Anglesey, Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham) as well as some parts of mid Wales, Cheshire and Shropshire.
The Health Board employs around 16,100 staff and has a budget of around £1.2 billion. It is responsible for the operation of three district general hospitals (Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor, Ysbyty Glan Clwyd near Rhyl, and Wrexham Maelor Hospital) as well as 18 other acute and community hospitals, and a network of over 90 health centre’s, clinics, community health team bases and mental health units.
It also co-ordinates the work of 115 GP practices and NHS services provided by North Wales dentists, opticians and pharmacies.

The service is constantly evolving and this post, in conjunction with the existing and new posts, will develop the next phase of the North Wales Haematology Service.
This post will be based at the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre, Ysbyty Glan Clwyd for 2 days/week and the Wrexham Maelor Hospital for 3 day/week.
As per the Welsh Consultant Contract, the full time job plan has 10 sessions, made up of 8 clinical sessions and 2 supporting professional activity sessions. In Wales a standard consultant’s session is 37.5 hours i.e. 37.5 hours/week for 10 sessions. Newly qualified consultants are offered 7 clinical sessions and 3 supporting professional activity sessions for the first year in post.

About the Role

This post will contribute to the provision of comprehensive and accessible haematology services across North Wales. Key elements of haematology care at BCUHB include provision of excellent haematology services as near as possible to the patient’s home and to expand the treatment options available to patients locally across North Wales.
The post will be expected to provide a comprehensive clinical and laboratory service in conjunction with the other consultant haematologists. This includes a rotating commitment to the inpatient service, weekly general outpatient clinics, day case, ward and GP referral commitments, routine diagnostic laboratory commitments.
The post holder will be expected to manage the full range of clinical haematology disorders including patients with leukemia, lymphoma and with inherited and acquired coagulation disorders. There are specialist nurses in thrombosis, haemophilia and haematology to assist with these services. The post holder will be expected to take part in the on-call rota which is 1 in 9.
The post holder will be a key member of the relevant multidisciplinary teams. The post holder will play an active role in the management of haematology services on site. Although the clinical workload will involve general and malignant haematology, the appointee will be encouraged to develop a subspecialty interest.
