The Trust
East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT) invites applications for a Consultant Haematologist based at Royal Blackburn Hospital, Blackburn. The successful candidate will have an interest in haemato-oncology and is expected to undertake outpatient clinics on Royal Blackburn and Burnley General Hospital sites. The hospitals have recently been designated Teaching hospital status.
Post – Consultant Haematologist
This is a replacement post. The team currently comprises 3 consultant haematologists, a speciality doctor and CMT2 doctors on rotation, two clinical nurse specialists, one clinical research trial nurse and two transfusion practitioners.
The department is warm, friendly, open and supportive and has a professional and friendly working relationship with clinicians. ELHT holds a weekly independent haemato-oncology MDT, with diagnostic services provided by HMDS Leeds and Radiotherapy services provided by Royal Preston Hospital. The MDT is highly rated in the recent cancer peer review.
The Department provides a clinical and laboratory service, managing a full range of haematological conditions to BCSH level 2a. Salvage therapy and high dose therapy cases are referred to Royal Victoria Hospital Blackpool and Central Manchester Haematology centres. Clinical haematology in-patient beds are ring fenced, with junior doctor cover provided by the medical team. The modern Blood Sciences laboratory is accredited to UKAS ISO15189.
The post holder should have a broad training in clinical and laboratory haematology and must hold full and specialist registration with a licence to practise with General Medical Council. Additionally they should be holder of Certificate of Completion of Training or be within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by the date of interview. Development of an area of special interest will be encouraged and the post holder will be expected to participate in the on-call rota, providing advice and clinical help across hospital and community.
ELHT has an active educational programme and the post holder has an opportunity to participate in the education of medical students/foundation year doctors.
