Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is the largest health board in Wales employing circa 16,500 staff, has a budget of around £1.2 billion and operates three district general hospitals, 22 other acute and community hospitals and a network of more than 90 health centres, clinics, community health team bases and mental health units.
The Health Board has a clear vision and ambition to provide truly outstanding health care services for all its communities and so has established an integrated radiology department operating from 3 sites. The post holders will be based in a brand new, purpose built Department at Glan Clwyd Hospital and will be part of multidisciplinary team supporting breast and other services in North Wales. The breast position is primarily to support symptomatic breast services, but the radiology division also has a number of consultants with commitments to the national breast screening service (Breast Test Wales) which is managed by Public Health Wales – a joint appointment may be considered.
The Health Board is seeking to expand its established team of consultants by appointing talented, ambitious, visionary clinician to join the North Wales radiology department through this dynamic phase of its development. Consultants are offered the opportunity to take a leading role in a particular area of MDT specialist interest such as breast. The flexibility of working off site clinical and supportive sessions is also in place and can be discussed in details with the interested candidates.
There is an established environment of teaching and training for junior radiology medical staff and other clinical groups. Support for the senior medical staff is also provided. An intradepartmental CPD programme involves learning from discrepancy, audit and governance meetings. This is further supplemented by hospital grand rounds and a variety of courses arranged by the postgraduate department aimed at career progression. Appropriate external CPD is funded.

The breast consultant forms part of a dedicated multi-disciplinary team on site including surgeons, pathologists, oncologists, breast care clinical nurse specialists, research nurse specialists and mammographers. The clinicians in YGC have close links with the other sites as part of a regional service and also with the national screening service with three of the existing consultant radiologists within the Health Board being employed on split contracts with Breast Test Wales.
All mammography equipment across North Wales has been recently procured with tomosynthesis being a standard feature for breast imaging. Breast MR is undertaken and contrast enhanced digital mammography (CEDM) is about to commence within the service.
The service across North Wales diagnoses in the region of 2700 new cancer patients each year and is supported by digital pathology system and a regional PACS. Onco-plastic reconstructive surgery and OSNA are provided for the region in YGC and surveillance Breast MRI is provided in Ysbyty
Gwynedd.
